My husband and photography/business partner loves to hike. In fact, he hiked part of the Appalachian Trail before we met.
There are many cities and towns on the Appalachian Trail that welcome thru-hikers, but Damascus, Virginia is unique with it's huge festival held in mid-May each year. One of his favorite memories from that hike was that he got to experience the Appalachian Trail Days Festival in Damascus, Virginia.
Both VisitDamascus.org and AppalachianTrail.org have the same summarized description of the event: "The Appalachian Trail Days Festival is the biggest event of the year in Damascus and the world’s largest celebration of the Appalachian Trail and hiker culture! Each year in May, the town swells to an estimated 25,000 people for the festival. You can expect a grand reunion of thru-hikers past and present, over a hundred vendors of handmade goods and some of the best outdoor gear in the industry, a packed schedule of live music and events, and a large crowd of trail supporters and hiking enthusiasts."
As someone who loves to explore his surroundings, he didn't stay on the beaten path for the festival. One of those trees that have the manufactured eyes, nose and mouth caught his eye and he noticed that it wasn't the only interesting aspect of the property.
The owner was outside and he asked if he could explore. He took a lot of photos of the property, but the gallery photo was his favorite that day.
He and I both love shooting through windows, They have an aspect that help them stand apart... the window makes a natural frame, which leads the eye to the center. This also creates a sense of wonder and promotes curiosity.
Speaking of curiosity, you might be curious where the other two windows were found. One was at Samford University, where he took photography classes. The other was at Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains.
