I'm a very visual person. I'm the kind of person who sees pictures in everything - even weird things. For example, recently I saw a perfect heart in some water I spilled.
You may be thinking anyone would notice those things - and maybe everyone does. But an even weirder one is the TV looking like it had a concave place in the middle.
When I first saw the dancing tree, I wondered if everyone had noticed it but me. Obviously, it had been there for a while - something like that didn't just pop up overnight.
However, after I saw it, I couldn't un-see it...
...and as a wanna-be dancer (my parents couldn't afford dance lessons for me when I was young) and a professional photographer, I also couldn't not shoot it.
So I did.
These were taken in 2006. Back then cell phones didn't have cameras. I couldn't simply take a photo of the dancing tree as I drove by.
Also note that I said, "drove by." The dancing tree was beside a major road. It took a lot of forethought to get these images. It didn't help that the best place to take them was in the road. Though digital editing was a thing back then, it wasn't common. I needed to get the shot framed the way I wanted in camera.
Furthermore, the lighting had to be right. Now I know so much more about the importance of lighting, but eve then I knew enough that at least I tried to make sure the lighting was the way I wanted. In other words, there were only certain times of day I could work on these photos.
Finally, I knew I wanted to get the dancing tree in different seasons. I ended up with a winter version first, then a spring version, and finally an autumn version. (There was too much growth in front of the tree in the summer to get a decent photo.)
The winter version shows the most of the tree. The tree is much harder to see in the autumn one, but I love the fall colors from my favorite season. The spring version has that new green growth around it (better than the dreary brown of winter), but that got in the way of seeing the whole thing.
I can't choose a favorite. Each has characteristics I love and others I don't. I wanted to show the dancing tree within each season, thus the series of three.
I'm so glad I got the photos when I did, because it wasn't long after my last shot that it either fell or was cut down. This is one of the reasons I love photography so much - you can save and share those moments for years to come.
